The historic Roman town of Pompeii is among the best-known archaeological ruins on this planet. It’s now additionally the website of an eco-experiment that has introduced in a flock of 150 sheep to care for its many grassy spaces
Gabriel Zuchtriegel is Director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park. “Whoever comes to Pompeii discovers that the city is not only made up of streets, domus and shops but also of vast green areas and these areas represent a cost for maintenance for us,” he says.
“And so this project that sees sheep as protagonists and is called ‘Pompeii farm’ is actually part of a much larger project that has the ultimate goal of enhancing the entire agricultural area of the Archaeological Park. As has already happened for other archaeological sites, this type of activity becomes useful for various reasons: because they serve to enhance these areas.”
The sheep lend a hand reclaim the meadows at little value or air pollution. And in contrast to a lawnmower that leaves in the back of minimize grass to be disposed of, the sheep consume the grass, recycle it and in fertilize the garden, which in flip protects in opposition to flooding and drought.
The eco-pasture task is a part of the wider Pompeii farm undertaking that the Archaeological Park is setting up. It contains vineyards, olive bushes and a Pompeian plants nursery, with without equal purpose of making social-agricultural initiatives that spice up the group and improve guests’ enjoy.
