British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak mentioned that China poses a “systemic challenge” to UK” values and interests” all the way through his first primary speech on international coverage since taking workplace in October.
Downing Street condemned Beijing after a BBC journalist claimed he used to be overwhelmed through police and detained for a number of hours whilst masking Covid-19 lockdown protests in Shanghai.
“Instead of listening to their people’s protests, the Chinese Government has chosen to crack down further, including by assaulting a BBC journalist”, Sunak mentioned in his speech on the Lord Mayor’s Banquet in London.
“The media – and our parliamentarians – must be able to highlight these issues without sanction, including calling out abuses in Xinjiang – and the curtailment of freedom in Hong Kong”, he added.
The UK broadcaster says Lawrence used to be assaulted and kicked through police.
After his unlock, the journalist tweeted on Monday to thank his fans, including he believed “at least one local national was arrested after trying to stop the police from beating me”.
China’s international ministry claims Lawrence failed to spot himself as a journalist.
It follows national demonstrations in opposition to strict Covid-19 measures after a dangerous fireplace in a residential block all the way through a lockdown remaining week.
