UN Report On Hunger: According to the latest report released by the United Nations, 25 thousand people are dying every day worldwide due to hunger and related reasons. The largest number of these are of children. It has been told in the UN report that every day ten thousand children are losing their lives due to hunger. At the same time, about 854 million people worldwide have been estimated to be malnourished. Also, it has been estimated that due to the rapidly rising prices of food items, this number will soon touch the figure of 100 million. It has been told in the report that most small farmers, including the urban poor, displaced population, rural landless, are most at risk of being malnourished.
Regarding this crisis of hunger, the UN has claimed that during the last two decades, population growth, income improvement and diversification of diet have increased the demand for food continuously. Before 2000, there was a drop in food prices, largely through record harvests. However, at the same time there was a decline in public and private investment in agriculture, and especially in the production of staple food, leading to stagnant or declining crop yields in most developing countries.
Another reason behind the rise in food prices in the report has been attributed to urbanization competing to convert agricultural land to non-agricultural uses. The resulting low food prices have encouraged farmers to shift to alternative food and non-food crops.
UN stresses on immediate action
The UN has expressed concern over the global food crisis in its new report. The report focused on countries and regions where the severity of the food crisis far outweighs local resources and capabilities. Experts say that due to the corona epidemic in the last two years, it has had a bad effect on the work of the people. Millions of people have become victims of unemployment around the world. In such a situation, immediate action is needed to save these people and avoid starvation deaths.
