Grand Prix Badminton League 2022: The first season of the Grand Prix Badminton League (GPBL), which was to be held from July 1 to 10, has now been extended till August 12 in view of the international badminton calendar and other national tournaments. The organizers gave information about this on Tuesday. The GPBL, played under the aegis of Karnataka Badminton Association, comprises eight teams, which will now be held from August 12 to 21.
The organizer said, “The league was originally scheduled to be held from July 1 to 10. But in view of the international badminton calendar and the India Junior National Ranking tournament in Panchkula, it has been shifted to August 12, as some of the players participating in it have to be played. Ranking points may have been hampered.”
Teams in the field include PV in Bengaluru Lions, Mangalore Sharks, Mandya Bulls, Mysore Panthers, Malnad Falcons, Bandipur Tuskers, KGF Wolves and Kodagu Tigers. Shuttlers like Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, Sai Praneeth, Jwala Gutta, Ashwini Ponnappa, Chirag Shetty, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and HS Prannoy will be seen playing.
The winners will be offered a total of Rs 60 lakh as prize money with a prize money of Rs 24 lakh. GPBL CEO BitSport and league commissioner Prashant Reddy said, “Keeping in mind the best interests of the players who have scored ranking points, we have shifted the GPBL to August, which will not clash with major badminton tournaments.”
He further said, this period will give some more time to the organizing committee and the franchises to strengthen their position financially and to prepare the teams physically.
