Sunil Gavaskar on Shikhar Dhawan: If former veteran cricketer Sunil Gavaskar is to be believed, Shikhar Dhawan may miss out on playing in the T20 World Cup to be held in October this year. Gavaskar says that it is difficult for Shikhar to find a place in the Indian team. Gavaskar also gives some reasons behind this.
In a conversation with Star Sports, Gavaskar says, ‘No, I don’t think Shikhar Dhawan’s name is coming up. Had his name been discussed, he would have been part of the Indian team against Ireland. Many players have gone to England for Test matches. In such a situation, Shikhar Dhawan could have been part of the T20 squad against Ireland. If he is not in this squad then I am not even seeing him in the Indian team for the T20 World Cup.
Shikhar Dhawan has played two T20 World Cups for Team India. He was part of India’s World Cup squad in 2014 and 2016. Shikhar has also scored a lot of runs in this season of IPL. He scored 460 runs in 14 innings for Punjab Kings at a batting average of 38.33. His strike rate was also above 120. He had hit 3 fifty this season. Despite all this, he was not given a place in the Indian team for the T20 series against South Africa and Ireland.
KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma are the contenders for the opening pair
In the series against South Africa, Rituraj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan started the innings for Team India but the pair did not prove to be that effective. Ishan Kishan scored good runs but despite this, Gavaskar considers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma as the biggest contenders for India’s opening pair. He says, ‘If KL Rahul is fit for the opening pair, then I would like to see Rohit Sharma with him.’
