European Union on Russian Oil: The war between Russia and Ukraine continues for the 70th day. Many cities in Ukraine have been destroyed. Despite sanctions from many countries and international organizations, Russia continues to bomb Ukraine. Meanwhile, once again the European Union is looking tough against Russia. The European Union is planning a phased oil embargo on Russia. Also working on banning more banks. The European Union’s chief executive on Wednesday proposed a phased oil embargo on Russia over the war in Ukraine. Along with this, there is a plan to ban more top banks of Russia. The same Russian broadcasters have already been banned from European airwaves.

What is the EU’s plan on Russian oil?

If agreed upon by EU governments, the region would have to find alternative supplies for the world’s largest trading bloc that relies on Russian energy. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament in Strasbourg that today we will propose to ban all Russian oil from Europe. This would be a complete import ban on the whole of Russia. Import of crude oil will be banned within 6 months and then refined products will not be imported till the end of 2022.

Many countries, including the US, have already imposed many sanctions on Russia, but Vladimir Putin is yet to indicate any concrete steps towards a ceasefire.
