IPL Media Rights 2023-27 Auction: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will start the auction of media rights for the next five years of IPL (IPL Media Rights 2023-27 Auction) from today (June 12) at 11 am. Many big companies of the world will be involved in this auction. BCCI is expected to get 50 to 55 thousand crores from this auction. Which companies will be involved in the auction?
Reliance Group’s Viacom-18, Disney Star Network, Sony Sports Network as well as Zee Group, Times Internet, SuperSport and FunAsia are participating in the auction to get the media rights for the IPL. Jeff Bezos’s company Amazon was also involved in this race but two days ago the company withdrew its name.
How will the auction take place?
This auction is divided into four different packages. A separate auction will be held for each package.
- The first package is of TV rights of the Indian subcontinent. That is, broadcasting of IPL on TV in countries of South Asia including India. The base price of a match in this package is Rs 49 crores.
- The second package is of digital rights in the Indian subcontinent. That is, the broadcast of IPL on the digital platform in South Asia. Here the base price of a match is Rs 33 crore.
- The third package is of 18 selected matches of a season. This includes the first match of the season, the evening matches in the weekend double header and four playoff matches. There will be a separate bid for these. Here the base price of a match is Rs 11 crore.
- The fourth package is for TV and digital broadcast rights outside the Indian subcontinent. Here the base price of a match is Rs 3 crore.
What is the base price and where can the auction money reach?
If we look at the base price of all the matches of all the four packages, then the total base price of all the matches of 5 years is Rs 32,890 crores. That is, the board will get at least more than 32 thousand crores from this auction. Although the board expects that the media rights of 5 years of IPL can be sold for 50 to 55 thousand crores.
For how much were media rights sold earlier?
The last auction of IPL media rights was held in the year 2017. Then Star India bought the media rights till 2022 for Rs 16,347.50 crore. Earlier in 2008, Sony Pictures Networks had won the media rights for 10 years by bidding for Rs 8,200 crore.
