Mahela Jayawardene Mumbai Indians IPL 2022: Mumbai Indians registered their first win of IPL 2022 by defeating Rajasthan Royals by five wickets on 30 April and came close to winning the match several times this season. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene said that this win has created a very good atmosphere in the team. Regarding the match against Royals, Jayawardene said, “It is good to see that we were able to show our skills and at the same time finish the match well.”
He further said, we had a lot of opportunities to finish the match with the ball and the bat this season, but we could not. Hence, winning encourages the team to score points in the table.
They now face Gujarat Titans, who are at the top of the points table, on May 6 at the Brabourne Stadium, although the head coach would prefer the team to take the field as soon as possible, to carry forward the winning momentum. “Unfortunately, we had to wait for four days before playing another match. The focus has been good, we have had some good talks. Looking forward to the next match, which is tough,” Jayawardene said.
Jayawardene said, “We just need to win matches and play some good cricket, which will give confidence. It has been tough for us as a team, there is nothing to hide about it.”
Though we haven’t won many matches, Mumbai Indians continue to give opportunities to new talent. Tilak Verma has performed brilliantly and Devald Brevis has shown a glimpse of immense potential. Spinner Kumar Karthikeya made his debut against the Royals and did exceptionally well, while young Hrithik Shoukin has also continued his impressive run.
Jayawardene said, “KK (Kumar Karthikeya) also bowled brilliantly, he has worked very hard on his bowling. When we got the opportunity to send him on the field, we knew he had the skills and could bowl brilliantly. It’s great to see these players perform.”
He said, “This season has been especially good for us young players, who are taking the responsibility of the team, and are very excited to take the team forward.”
