Indian Football Team FIFA Nations Cup 2022 Sunil Chhetri: The Indian football team on Saturday created history by qualifying for the FIFA Nations Cup 2022. This is the first time that India will be playing in the esports showpiece event, which is scheduled to take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, from July 27 to 30 this year. India qualified for the showpiece event by defeating Korea and Malaysia in the FIFA Nations Series 2022 playoffs.

The journey of the Indian eFootball team began in January 2021 when AIFF signed a partnership agreement with FIFA for the FIFA Nations Series 2021. India was among the 60 participating countries and was placed in the Middle East and Africa region. India finished third in their region, missing out on a spot in the FIFA Nations Playoff 2021.

India ended the season with a global ranking of 22 and ranked above stalwarts like Italy, Argentina and Spain in the 2021 rankings. India were relegated to the Asia/Oceania region for the 2022 season and placed in the play-ins, which would provide direct qualification for the playoffs (the final stage before the Nations Cup). During the play-ins, India played 32 matches, with 12 wins, 11 losses and 9 draws. During the entire 4 match weeks, India retained its position in Division 1.

With this, India successfully qualified for the playoffs by finishing second in the Consistency Points chart. During this period, India also achieved its highest global ranking of 19.

Going into the playoffs, the target was easy for India. Win 2 matches and cement their place in the showpiece event and that’s exactly what they did, one can say. With the help of Charanjot Singh, Siddha Chandrana and Sarshan Jain, India defeated Korea and Malaysia and now the team will go to Denmark at the end of July.
