Reigning world champion Nikhat Zareen (50kg) and Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain (70kg) continued their stellar performances. Nikhat and Lovlina sealed their places in the Indian team for the Commonwealth Games with dominant victories in the selection trials. Two-time Strandja Memorial gold medalist Nikhat defeated Haryana’s Meenakshi 7-0 in a unanimous decision while Lovlina defeated Railway’s Pooja by the same margin.
Neetu (48kg) and Jasmine (60kg) also cemented their places in the squad for the Commonwealth Games. Nikhat looked completely in control during her match and she made full use of the ring to hit strong punches.
Two-time former youth world champion Neetu registered a 5-2 win over 2019 silver medalist Manju Rani in a fractured decision. The Haryana boxer has had a wonderful year in which she also won a gold medal at the Strandja Memorial this year.
Mary Kom withdraws name
2021 Asian Youth Boxing Championship bronze medalist Jasmine defeated 2022 World Championship bronze medalist Parveen Hooda in the light middleweight final. The Commonwealth Games will be held in Birmingham from 28 July to 8 August.
