Commonwealth Games 2022: India has announced the hockey team for the Commonwealth Games, starting July 29 in Birmingham. It will be led by Manpreet Singh, while Harmanpreet Singh was made the vice-captain. India, placed in Pool B along with England, Canada, Wales and Ghana, will start their campaign against Ghana on July 31.

Manpreet’s return as the captain of the 18-man squad for the tournament will enable India to relive the magic of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, where they won bronze after a gap of more than four decades. Whereas, vice-captain Harmanpreet Singh was the FIH Pro League’s highest goal scorer, so India can expect a stellar performance in Birmingham.

The team comprises experienced goalkeepers PR Sreejesh and Krishan B Pathak, who are making a comeback in the team after injury. Defenders Varun Kumar, Surendra Kumar, Harmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Jugraj Singh and Jarmanpreet Singh have been kept in the team. The midfield includes the experience of Manpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Shamsher Singh, Akashdeep Singh and Neelkant Sharma, while experienced strikers Mandeep Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, Gurjant Singh and Abhishek will lead the attack.

In their previous tournament at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, India had to face disappointment at the fourth place. However, after a stellar performance in the FIH Pro League this year, the Indian team is on course to achieve success in Birmingham. Speaking about the team selection, head coach Graham Reid said, “We have gone to the Commonwealth Games with a wonderful team. These players have the experience of playing top teams in high pressure matches in the FIH Pro League.”
